Abstract

Background: Iron accumulation in β thalassemia mayor is due to transfusion and it often decreases the patient's quality of life. Leptin produced predominantly in adipocyte tissue and irisin released by the muscle influence on bone function in β thalassemia mayor and non-thalassemia.
Aim: To evaluate differences in levels of leptin and irisin in β thalassemia mayor and non-thalassemia
Method: This cross sectional study performed on 80 subjects divided into 40 thalassemia groups β-thalassemia major and 40 non-thalassemic groups. Examination of leptin and irisin levels were examination by enzymed linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Analysis data by Mann Whitney test.
Results: Leptin levels were lower in thalasemia β-mayor with a median value of 0.2 (0.1 – 4.7) ng/mL and non-talasemia 5 (0.1 – 55.1) ng/mL; p value = 0,001. Irisin levels were also lower in thalassemia β-mayor with a median 7.7 (4.9 – 60.9) ng/mL and non-talasemia 8.2 (5.3 – 67.2) ng/mL; p value =0,038.
Conclusion: This study showed lower levels of leptin and irisin in β thalassemia major compared to non-thalassemia. This difference can be caused by iron accumulation on thalassemia β-mayor.
