Abstract

This study aims to find out and understand how to use a collection of Braille books
as a source of information for students with visual impairments at the State A
Special School of Semarang. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study
approach. Data were collected using 3 methods, namely semi-structured
interviews, observation, and documentation. The informant selection technique in
this study used purposive sampling technique. There were 5 informants consisting
of 3 students with visual impairments, 1 teacher for students with visual
impairments, and 1 librarian. Data analysis used is data reduction, data display,
conclusion drawing / verifying. The results show that the collection of Braille books
is a source of information used by students with visual impairments, the collections
available in the library include a collection of the Braille Qur'an, Braille
magazines, textbooks (science, social studies, and Indonesian Language), story
books (fiction and fables). Activities that are often carried out by students in using
a collection of Braille books are reading activities. The collection of Braille books
often read by students with visual impairments is a collection of story books or fairy
tales such as fables & fiction. The information needs of students with visual
impairments are more about information about stories or fairy tales such as fables
and fiction. Librarians and teachers have an important role in the process of
utilizing a collection of Braille books. The obstacles experienced by students with
visual impairments in utilizing Braille book collections include difficulties in taking
and returning books, difficulties in reading Braille books, and there are still
collections that are not yet available in the Semarang State Special School Part A
library.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan memahami bagaimana pemanfaatan
koleksi buku Braille sebagai sumber informasi siswa penyandang tunanetra di
Sekolah Luar Biasa Bagian A Negeri Semarang. Penelitian ini menggunakan
metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Pengambilan data dilakukan
dengan 3 metode yaitu wawancara semi terstruktur, observasi, dan dokumentasi.
Teknik pemilihan informan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan Teknik purposive
sampling. Terdapat 5 informan yang terdiri dari 3 siswa penyandang tunanetra, 1
guru siswa penyandang tunanetra, dan 1 pustakawan. Analisis data yang digunakan
adalah data reduction, display data, conclusion drawing / verifying. Hasil penelitian
menunjukkan bahwa koleksi buku Braille menjadi sumber informasi yang
dimanfaatkan oleh siswa penyandang tunanetra, koleksi yang tersedia di
perpustakaan meliputi koleksi Al-Qur’an Braille, majalah Braille, buku pelajaran
(IPA, IPS, dan Bahasa Indonesia), buku cerita (Fiksi dan Fabel). Kegiatan yang
sering dilakukan siswa dalam pemanfaatan koleksi buku Braille yaitu kegiatan
membaca. Koleksi buku Braille yang sering dibaca siswa penyandang tunanetra
yaitu koleksi buku cerita atau dongeng seperti fabel & fiksi. Kebutuhan informasi
siswa penyandang tunanetra lebih ke informasi mengenai cerita atau dongeng
seperti fabel dan fiksi. Pustakawan dan guru memiliki peran penting dalam proses
pemanfaatan koleksi buku Braille. Adapun kendala yang dialami siswa penyandang
tunanetra dalam memanfaatkan koleksi buku Braille diantaranya yaitu kesulitan
dalam mengambil dan mengembalikan buku, kesulitan dalam membaca buku
Braille, serta masih terdapat koleksi yang belum tersedia di perpustakaan Sekolah
Luar Biasa Bagian A Negeri Semarang.
