Abstract

This study aims to determine the use of novel books as a bibliotherapy medium in
fostering an optimism in adolescent cancer patients at Yayasan Kasih Anak Kanker
Indonesia (YKAKI). This research method is a qualitative method with an approach
to action research. Methods of data collection were carried out by indirect
observation, semi-structured interviews, and document studies. The informants in
this study were obtained through snowball sampling. The results of this study
indicate that the use of novel books in the implementation of bibliotherapy in
adolescent cancer patients at YKAKI can be used at the identification stage, where
through the similarity of characters and problems being faced by adolescent cancer
patients with problems experienced by characters in the book. Patients can feel
what the characters feel and can be emotionally involved with these characters. So
patients can be motivated to follow problem solving methods and other positive
things that characters do. Therefore, through the plot, meaning, and positive things
done by characters in novel books can help open the view of adolescent cancer
patients at the YKAKI, that there are other people who also experience things
similar to themselves and are more motivated to follow the ways and positive
attitudes of characters in solving health problems due to cancer they suffer. The
success of the patient in identifying herself with the contents of the novel can be
seen through positive changes in the patient's optimism and expression, which
becomes more open and cheerful, and wants to be closer to God, even in the
recovery phase of side effects after the chemotherapy treatment process.

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pemanfaatan buku novel sebagai media
biblioterapi dalam menumbuhkan optimisme pada pasien kanker usia remaja di
Yayasan Kasih Anak Kanker Indonesia (YKAKI). Metode penelitian ini ialah
metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan action research. Metode pengumpulan data
dilakukan dengan observasi tidak langsung, wawancara semi-terstruktur, dan studi
dokumen. Informan dalam penelitian ini diperoleh melalui snowball sampling.
Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan buku novel dalam
pelaksanaan biblioterapi pada pasien kanker usia remaja di YKAKI dapat
digunakan pada tahap identifikasi, di mana melalui kemiripan tokoh dan
permasalahan yang sedang dihadapi pasien kanker kategori usia remaja dengan
permasalahan yang dialami tokoh karakter dalam buku novel, pasien dapat
merasakan apa yang dirasakan tokoh karakter dan dapat terlibat secara emosional
dengan tokoh karakter tersebut. Pasien dapat termotivasi untuk mengikuti cara
penyelesaian masalah dan hal-hal positif lainnya yang dilakukan tokoh karakter.
Maka dari itu, melalui alur, makna, dan hal-lal positif yang dilakukan tokoh
karakter dalam buku novel dapat membantu membuka pandangan pasien kanker
usia remaja di YKAKI, bahwa ada orang lain yang juga mengalami hal yang serupa
dengan dirinya dan lebih termotivasi untuk mengikuti cara dan sikap positif tokoh
karakter dalam menyelesaikan permasalahan kesehatan akibat penyakit kanker
yang dideritanya. Keberhasilan pasien dalam mengidentifikasi dirinya dengan isi
buku novel dapat dilihat melalui perubahan positif pada sikap dan ekspresi optimis
pasien yang menjadi lebih terbuka dan ceria, serta lebih ingin mendekatkan diri
kepada Tuhan, bahkan pada fase pemulihan efek samping pasca proses pengobatan
kemoterapi yang dijalani.
