Abstract

This study was conducted to prove whether there is a relationship between shyness and academic achievement among students in Al-Azhar 14 Islamic Middle School, Semarang. Shyness is an individual reaction due to the feel of discomfort when facing the crowd or social situations in the form of tension, and a sense of awkwardness due to paying too much attention about other people's judgments. While, academic achievement is student's level of success in learning academic substance such as materials, skills, and knowledge that can be measured using test with the results in form of scores. The population is all 419 active students. The subjects that used for trial were 50, and 271 students were used as research samples through simple random sampling. The measuring instrument used in this study is the shyness scale (24 items α=0,907) and using student’s academic scores to measure academic achievement. Data analysis was carried out using Spearman Rho. Correlation coefficient (rxy) between shyness and academic achievement was -0.063 with significance of ρ=0.304 (ρ>0.05). The correlation coefficient results showed that there is no significant correlation between shyness and academic achievement in students of Al-Azhar 14 Islamic Middle School.
