Abstract

The demand for pectin in Indonesia continues to increase annually, however, a significant portion of the domestic demand is still fulfilled through imports due to the limited production capacity of the local pectin industry. Therefore, a pectin plant with a production capacity of 2,000 tons/year is proposed, utilizing citrus peel as the raw material. The plant is planned to be located in Tlogowaru Village, Kedungkandang District, Malang City, East Java. Citrus peel was selected as the raw material due to its abundant availability as an agricultural waste generated from Siamese orange (Citrus sp.) production in Malang and its surrounding areas. This utilization also supports the sustainable management and valorization of agricultural waste. The pectin production process is carried out through acid extraction using a dilute citric acid solution at a concentration of 0.5–1.0% (w/v), at a temperature of 80–90°C for 60–90 minutes. The process is subsequently followed by evaporation for concentration, precipitation using isopropyl alcohol, drying, and grinding. This process is expected to achieve an extraction conversion of 75–85% and produce powdered pectin classified as High Methoxyl Pectin (HMP) with a purity of ≥96%. Based on the economic feasibility analysis, the Fixed Capital Investment (FCI) is estimated at Rp 831,394,824,461.83, while the Total Capital Investment, consisting of FCI and Working Capital, is estimated at Rp 1,029,948,170,777.29. The analysis results indicate a Return on Investment (ROI) of 44.01% and a Pay Out Time (POT) of 2.27 years. Furthermore, the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) is 47.89%, with a Break-Even Point (BEP) of 27.91% and a Shut Down Point (SDP) of 7.50%. Based on these economic evaluation results, the proposed pectin plant utilizing citrus peel as the raw material is considered economically feasible for establishment.
