Abstract

This study aims to examine the potential use of ammonia as a fuel additive in the co-firing process in coal-fired power plants. Co-firing with ammonia is a key topic in the clean energy transition, given that ammonia does not produce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions during combustion. This study was conducted by testing ammonia co-firing with a maximum ammonia-to-coal ratio of 3% in a Subcritical Pulverized Coal & Tangential Firing Boiler at a 300 MW coal-fired power plant (PLTU).
The test results showed an increase in boiler efficiency, indicated by a decrease in the Net Plant Heat Rate (NPHR) of 109 Kcal/kwh with stable combustion. NOx emissions increased by 0.104 ppm compared to coal combustion. This study also identified optimal operating conditions and an ammonia-to-coal co-firing ratio that can be used to reduce environmental impacts without drastically reducing system efficiency. The results of this study are expected to provide guidance for the energy industry in implementing ammonia-based co-firing technology to achieve decarbonization targets.
