Abstract
This study analyzes about consumerism and cultural capital represented by Gabrielle Solis in the American TV series Desperate Housewives. By utilizing Jagdish N. Sheth’s theory of consumption values and Bourdieu’s cultural capital, this study aims to identify what values drives Gabrielle’s consumerism and what cultural capital she depicts in its relation to consumerism. The findings show that Gabrielle’s consumerism is driven by three consumption values that reflect how her consumption is not simply about acquiring things. Furthermore, the findings reveal that Gabrielle depict embodied and objectified cultural capital, which are connected to her consumerism. It can be concluded that Gabrielle Solis has a rooted value in which consumption function as a practice through which her cultural capital are expressed.
