Abstract
This study is motivated by the experience of parental divorce, which can affect emotional life, family relationships, and how early adult women make meaning of partners and marriage. This study aims to understand the experience of choosing a partner among early adult women whose parents are divorced. It employs a qualitative method with a descriptive phenomenological approach. The participants consisted of three early adult women who were married and had experienced parental divorce. Participants were selected using purposive sampling, with the criteria of being 20–30 years old, having experienced parental divorce before entering early adulthood, and being married. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, using an interview guide as the research instrument. The data were analysed using Descriptive Phenomenological Analysis (DPA). The results revealed five essential themes: relational wounds and the loss of a sense of security within a family full of tension; vulnerability in making meaning of romantic relationships rooted in relationships with the family of origin; unconditional acceptance and a sense of security as primary considerations in choosing a partner; commitment to maintaining the marriage amid challenges and the shadow of the family-of-origin experience; and the reinterpretation of past experiences in a more positive light along with the hope of building a more stable family. The implications of this study point to the importance of individual awareness in understanding emotional needs, building relationships more carefully, as well as the importance of parental and social support for children who have experienced parental divorce.
