Abstract

This research presents a study of Otto’s grieving process based on Kübler & Kessler’s
five stages of grief theory using Halliday’s transitivity system. The objectives of this
study are to identify the stages of grief experienced by Otto and to analyse how his
utterances represent his emotional states. The units of analysis are clauses from Otto’s
utterances that reflect his grief. The data were collected through non-participant
observation and analysed using distributional and referential methods. A total of 41
clauses were identified from the movie, consisting of 25 material processes, 11 mental
processes, 21 relational processes, and 2 existential processes. The findings reveal that
Otto underwent all five stages of grief, but not in chronological order. Moreover, some
stages occur simultaneously, indicating a complex and non-linear grieving process.
