Abstract

The Wall (1982), is a film based on Pink Floyd’s concept album, that is full of symbolism and imagery expression. It tells the story of a rock star named Pink, whose emotional breakdown is shaped by personal loss and the lasting impact of war. The purpose of this thesis is to research the way emotion and war are expressed through metaphors. Using the theory of Conceptual Metaphor by Lakoff and Johnson (2003) and Metaphor Identification Procedure by Pragglejaz Group (2007), this research examines how the songwriter uses metaphors to express the abstract concepts of emotion and war. The metaphors were derived from note-taking relevant lines from the songs in the film. The results of the study find emotions and war are framed as source domains that are easier to understand. The metaphors use vehicles to represent abstract experiences and complex concepts into vivid, relatable images. These metaphorical expressions shape the style of the film by creating a dark tone, amplifying emotional impact, and letting viewers feel Pink’s emotions. This stylistic effect makes the narrative more immersive and helps the audience connect with the main character’s struggle.
