Abstract

This study analyzes politeness strategies in the Netflix series Ginny and
Georgia (2021), focusing on the characters Georgia Miller and Ginny Miller. Data
were collected from two seasons using the documentation method and nonparticipant
observation to capture verbal and non-verbal cues such as tone and
gestures. The note taking technique was applied to record selected utterances along
with episode, context, and speaker and addressee details. Library research
supported the theoretical framework. The analysis applied Brown and Levinson’s
(1987) politeness theory, which consists of bald on record, positive politeness,
negative politeness, and off record strategies, through a descriptive qualitative
approach. Utterances were categorized and compared based on interactions with
insiders, including family and close friends, and outsiders, such as authority figures
and acquaintances. The findings show that both Georgia and Ginny used a total of
150 politeness strategies each, but with different preferences. Georgia most
frequently used positive politeness at 37 percent to maintain emotional closeness
and bald on record strategies at 28 percent for direct control, especially with
insiders. Ginny also preferred positive politeness at 41 percent, particularly with
friends, but used more off record strategies at 17 percent to subtly resist her
mother’s authority. Both characters increased their use of negative politeness when
speaking to outsiders, which reflected an awareness of hierarchy and formality.
These patterns indicate that politeness strategies in their dialogues not only manage
social relationships but also shows deeper aspects of power relations and character
development.
