Abstract

This thesis analyses the personality development of Rosaleen Madigan, as the main female characters in Anne Enright’s novel The Green Road. The writer aims to discuss Rosaleen’s characterization, identify her personality changes throughout the novel, and explore how these aspects influence each other. The writer adopts Hurlock's theory of personality development to analysis Rosaleen’s personality development. To collecting data, the writer uses a qualitative library research method and psychological approach from George.The result of the study is Rosaleen initially characterized as controlling, emotionally manipulative, and dependent. However, significant life events such as her husband’s death and increasing isolation from her children led Rosaleeen to become more introspective, flexible, and accepting. The rural Irish setting, particularly County Clare and the Green Road, strongly mirrors and affects her emotional transformation. The thesis concludes that Rosaleen's personality development is a positive development by both internal emotional experiences and external life conditions, emphazising that personality is dynamic, influenced continuously by experiences and relationships.
