Abstract

This study explores the representation of toxic beauty standards through the main
character in The Substance (2024) and how these standards result in physical and
mental consequences shaped by social expectations. This study applies Susan
Bordo’s theory to analyse how the main character responds to these standards,
particularly through the concept of the “docile body.” Bordo explains that women
are not openly forced but are shaped by social expectations to monitor, control, and
change their own bodies, particularly through the institutions like the TV industry.
This leads to self-discipline and transformation to fit the beauty standards. To
further support the analysis, this study uses Caputi and Nance’s theory of cultural
beauty stereotypes which includes ideas such as “women are the pretty sex,”
“submission is beautiful,” and “the image of the beautiful woman functions as an
icon or symbol for the beliefs and values of the core culture.” Caputi and Nance
explain that these ideas come from common beliefs in society that define women’s
beauty and value based on appearance, which helps this study explore how toxic
beauty standards are shown in the film. Through a qualitative method and
sociological approach, this study examines both intrinsic and extrinsic elements of
the film. The findings demonstrate how the film portrays the consequences of toxic
beauty standards, showing how they lead to physical harm and psychological
distress. Secondary data, including textbooks, academic papers, and online articles,
support the study’s analysis of how beauty standards control women’s bodies.
