Abstract

This study explores how swearing is used by the character Roy Kent in the first
season of televison series Ted Lasso (2020) and how it shapes his characterization.
Ted Lasso is used because there are a lot of swear words across the series. Analyzing
Roy Kent, particularly, is because he is using swear words mainly compared to
other characters. By using swearing theories proposed by Jay & Janschewitz (2008),
Battistella (2005), and Andersson & Trudgill (1990), I analyze the types and
functions of swearing in Roy’s dialogue to provide a structured and theoretically
grounded understanding of how swearing contributes to his characterization. Data
of the study are 85 of Roy Kent’s utterances that contains swearing. The study found
that Roy mostly uses vulgar or obscene language and the main function of his
swearing is expletive swearing. Those patterns show that Roy’s swearing is often
used to express strong emotions like anger and frustration. Moreover, through his
swearing, Roy Kent’s personality that are careless, loving, ambitious, and
sometimes vulnerable, are revealed. Future research could look at more episodes or
seasons to see how Roy’s swearing and character develop over time in the series.
