Abstract

This thesis examines the portrayal of female masculinity in Margot Douaihy’s Scorched Grace: A Sister Holiday Mystery (2023) within the scope of gender studies in literature. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that shape Sister Holiday’s masculine appearance and behaviour, the traits and stereotypes surrounding her gender expression, and how these influence her role in solving the mystery. The research is using Jack Halberstam’s theory of female masculinity through intrinsic literary analysis, focusing on character, characterization, setting, and conflict. The findings show that Sister Holiday’s masculinity is shaped by her personal trauma, resistance to patriarchy, and queer identity. Her tattoos, toughness, and rebellious habits act as visual markers of resistance but also expose her to stigma and marginalization. At the same time, these traits provide resilience and critical insight, enabling her to reveal the mystery in the novel. The study concludes that Sister Holiday’s female masculinity is a transformative force that challenges patriarchal norms.
