Abstract

Speech acts can convey different meanings depending on the context particularly when analyzing fictional characters. The Netflix series Wednesday (2022) gained massive popularity, going viral on social media platforms such as TikTok and receiving over 400,000 reviews on IMDb with an average rating of 8/10. Despite this, no prior study has analyzed how expressive speech acts reveal the main character’s traits, especially Wednesday Addams. This study aims to identify the types of expressive speech acts used Wednesday Addams and analyze how these acts reflect her character traits in the Wednesday (2022). The analysis is grounded in Searle and Vanderveken’s theory of expressive speech acts. A descriptive qualitative method was applied to examine Wednesday Addams’s utterances in selected episodes. Out of eleven possible types of expressive speech acts, eight were identified: thanking, congratulating, greeting, complimenting, condoling, lamenting, complaining, protesting, and boasting. The most prominent character shown by her expressive speech acts is protesting and complaining, suggesting that Wednesday Addams is considered a rebellious and nonconformist child.
