Abstract

This research thesis discusses the history of social injustice and racial inequality of African Americans community in 13th by Ava DuVernay. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the history of social injustice and racial inequality around African Americans community and how the United States government deal with the racism that have been around since 17th century. To analyze African Americans community racial inequality and social injustice value I use intrinsic and extrinsic aspects. The intrinsic aspect focuses on the narrative elements in films, intrinsic aspects in films, documentary film elements which brought up the history, and narrative about African Americans in the United States, while the extrinsic aspects focus on social injustice, Jim crow law, 13th amendment exception clause, modern slavery, racial inequality. In this analysis I use sociological approach to analyze the social injustice and racial inequality by using Karl Marx conflict theory and Joe R. Feagin systemic racism theory. The results indicates that the misuse of the 13th Amendment exception clause created a massive incarceration towards African Americans community that connected to slavery which highlights the continuous lineage mechanism of racial control that make African Americans suffer for more than decades, that later created black movements as a form of resistance from the African – Americans community to achieve the social justice and racial equality in the United States.
