Abstract

This research thesis discusses latin American women’s struggles against
gender stereotypes depicted in the movie Real Women Have Curves. This movie is
about a woman named Ana and her efforts to achieve her goals. This research thesis
aims to identify the representation of Latin American women in Real Women Have
Curves, to analyze the struggle against gender stereotypes experienced by the
characters in Real Women Have Curves, and to analyze the characters’ attempts to
overcome the experience of gender stereotyping in Real Women Have Curves. The
writer uses gender approach with gender and sexuality theory by Chris Beasley to
conduct the analysis, and uses library research to collect the data needed for the
research, covering primary and secondary data. The result of the research indicates
that there are two representations of latin American women in the movie Real
Women Have Curves, namely, women as housewives and women as unskilled
workers. Furthermore, the struggles against gender stereotypes found in the movie
are that women work equally to men, women go to school, and women maintain
positive self-images in society. Lastly, the character’s attempts to overcome gender
stereotypes found in the movie are to accept the gender stereotype and reject gender
stereotypes. The result of this research thesis shows that gender stereotypes have a
significant impact on a person’s daily life, particularly on women. Gender
stereotypes influence a person’s way of thinking and behaving. It is seen from the
representation of latin American women as well as the attempts to overcome gender
stereotypes, which results in a struggle against gender stereotypes in society.
