Abstract

This study analyzes the language features used by Serena van der Woodsen, the
main character in the TV series Gossip Girl, to explore the complexities of female
communication and character development. Utilizing a qualitative research design,
the analysis is based on a dataset of 56 utterances, identifying eight distinct
linguistic features associated with women's speech, including lexical hedges,
intensifiers, polite terms, empty adjectives, swear words, rising intonation, tag
questions, and specific color terms. The findings reveal that Serena's language
reflects her vulnerability, emotional depth, and social awareness, with lexical
hedges indicating her struggle with self-confidence and intensifiers highlighting her
passionate nature. Additionally, the study identifies four influential factors shaping
her language: social environment, character development, cultural expectations,
and interpersonal relationships. The research underscores the significance of
language in constructing female identities and navigating social dynamics,
contributing to a broader understanding of language and gender representation in
media. Ultimately, the study illustrates how Serena's evolving language features
mirror her personal growth and the complexities of female relationships within the
competitive landscape of the Upper East Side.
