Abstract

The focus of this study is to analyze the speech acts performed by Rocket Raccoon and High Evolutionary, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 characters, and their duality regarding relative power and its impact to characterization. The approach is through speech act analysis, utilizing the theories from Searle (1969) and Searl and Vanderveken (1985). This study is descriptive qualitative which employs observation as the data collection method. The data are from both characters’ conversation within the film. The results are that some of the assertives, commissives, directives, and expressives show High Evolutionary’s higher power than Rocket, while one of his assertive and directive acts show his lower power than Rocket. On the other hand, Rocket in some of his assertives and all directives show his inferiority, but eventually gained power over High Evolutionary, shown by some of his assertive acts, marking their dynamics. Rocket’s character was defined as round, while High Evolutionary’s character was flat, impacted by their relative power. Therefore, studying speech acts can give insight to the complexity of fictional or actual individuals as well as their relationships.
