Abstract

The prequel novel Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes depicts Coriolanus Snow’s moral corruption through the psychological dynamics of his personality as he pursues his ambition to maintain his status and power. The purpose of this study is to explore the psychological aspects of Coriolanus Snow that contribute to the formation of his narcissistic personality disorder and the maintenance of his narcissistic self within the novel. This study employs a literature review and Otto F. Kernberg’s theory on Aggressivity, Narcissism, and Self-Destructiveness in Psychotherapeutic Relationships. This analysis shows that Coriolanus’s psychological formation is influenced by an internal aggressiveness that he integrates into the pathological characteristics of NPD through his grandiose view of himself, his idealized and devalued relationships with others, and his destructive self-reflection. The use of primitive defense mechanisms toward the end of the novel leads Coriolanus Snow to cling to his narcissistic side to achieve his ambitions. Research on this prequel novel indicates that the manifestation of his narcissistic self influences his transformation into a tyrant, which is linked to fragile self-defense mechanisms, thereby justifying his violent actions and sense of superiority. Coriolanus Snow’s narcissistic tendencies serve as a psychological shield that ultimately drives his moral corruption.
