Abstract
Fashion is a form of communication that reflects identity, culture, and social values. The movie Barbie (2023) presents various fashion style that represent women and femininity in American culture. This research aims to analyze the representation of American women’s fashion and womanhood in Barbie (2023) and how fashion reflects the ideas of acceptance and rejection in Barbieland and the Real World. This research uses Roland Barthes’ theory of signification and applies a qualitative descriptive method. The findings show that American women’s fashion is represented through fashion styles such as hyper-feminine, sporty, casual, and professional. These styles delivers a deep meaning related to beauty, self-confidence, femininity, independence, and social roles. In conclusion, fashion in Barbie (2023) does not only functions as a form of clothing, but also as a sign system that represents women identity and cultural values in contemporary American society.
