Abstract

This study analyzes the personality development of Elfride Swancourt as the main character in Thomas Hardy’s A Pair of Blue Eyes. The writer aims to examine Elfride’s characterization, identify the changes in her personality throughout the novel, and explore the relationship between her characterization and personality development. The writer applies Hurlock’s theory of personality development to analyze the aspects and processes which cause Elfride’s personality changes. In collecting the data, the writer uses a qualitative library research method proposed by George and a psychological approach proposed by Hurlock. The results of the study show that Elfride is initially characterized as a naïve, innocent, and emotionally sensitive young woman. However, various emotional experiences, romantic relationships, and social pressures gradually shape her personality, leading her to develop greater emotional awareness, emotional burden, and self-awareness. The setting of place, time, and social environment also contribute significantly to her development by aspect her thoughts, emotions, and behavior. The study concludes that Elfride’s personality development is a change process influenced by both internal psychological aspects and external social experiences, demonstrating that personality continuously evolves through emotional conflicts, personal reflection, and interactions with the surrounding environment.
