Abstract

Pragmatic theory provides an appropriate framework for examining how language
operates in real interaction and how meaning is produced beyond literal sentence
meaning, and one of the frameworks is the use of assertive illocutionary acts. This
study aims to identify the types of assertive acts used by Katniss, the protagonist
in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) movie, analyze the reason why
Katniss performed certain type of assertive, and examine how the assertive acts
are applied. Descriptive-qualitative analysis method is applied in this study. The
data analyzed are all Katnis’s utterances that function as assertive illocutionary
acts. The results show that Katniss performed 83 assertive acts, and the most
dominant type is stating, followed by reporting, then claiming, and the least used
type is suggesting. Katniss mostly performed her assertive acts directly.
