Abstract

This research entitled “Psychosocial Development of Mason Jr. as the Main Character
in Boyhood Movie 2014” analyzes the psychological growth of Mason Evans Jr. in the
movie directed by Richard Linklater, focusing on his development from childhood to
early adulthood. The purpose of this research is to determine the causes of disruptions
in Mason Jr’s psychosocial development, examine the stages he experiences based on
Erik Erikson’s psychosocial theory, and analyze their effects on his personality
formation. This research applies a qualitative descriptive approach using a contextual
method, combining intrinsic elements (character, setting, and conflict) with extrinsic
analysis through Erikson’s theory, particularly autonomy versus shame and doubt,
initiative versus guilt, industry versus inferiority, identity versus confusion, and
intimacy versus isolation. The primary data were taken from the movie are dialogues,
scenes, and character development, while secondary data are obtained from books,
journals, and scholarly articles. Data are collected through library research and
analyzed interpretatively. The research findings indicate that Mason Jr’s development
was influenced by family instability, his parents’ divorce, abuse by his step-parents,
and frequent moves, all of which triggered internal and external conflicts that shaped
his identity. Despite experiencing emotional insecurity and confusion, Mason Jr.
gradually developed independence, self-awareness, and acceptance of life’s
uncertainties. Ultimately, he formed a stable sense of identity, demonstrating that
psychosocial growth is shaped by social interactions and personal reflection.
