Abstract

Humans have needs that they aspire to fulfil during their lifetime and their
needs come at varying types. This thesis focuses on analysing the various types of
needs and the preconditions that are required to achieve those needs as displayed
by the main character Mickey Barnes throughout his journey in Edward Ashton’s
novel Mickey 7. In order to achieve the results, the author utilized library method to
gather data from primary and secondary sources and applied a psychological
approach to analyse the data through the usage of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
and Preconditions for Need Satisfactions theories. The research that was conducted
resulted in the discoveries that the main character displayed and fulfilled all types
of hierarchy of needs ranging from physiological needs, safety needs, love and
belonging needs, self-esteem, and self-actualization and achieved the various
necessary preconditions to fulfil the needs such as fairness, freedom to collect
information, freedom of self-defence, freedom to speak, freedom of expression,
freedom to perform any action, and justice. Therefore, with the fulfilment of his
hierarchy of needs and accomplishing the preconditions for needs, the main
character, Mickey Barnes managed to achieve his self-actualization and became
something more than what he was in the beginning of the story.
