Abstract

Commitment in the romantic relationship is illustrated in the novel The Notebook
(1996) written by Nicholas Sparks through the image of Noah Calhoun. In order to
examine whether the character is committed to Allie, this study seeks to evaluate
Noah’s characteristics with regard to commitment as defined by Rusbult’s
Investment Model of Commitment. As per this model, the level of commitment
depends on satisfaction, quality of alternatives, investment and long-term
orientation. Based on the analysis, Noah demonstrates commitment in terms of high
satisfaction, low level of interest in alternatives, great investment and long-term
orientation. Commitment of Noah is expressed through his patience, loyalty and
consistency of actions throughout all life situations, such as separation and change
in life circumstances. Moreover, it should be stated that personal characteristics of
Noah have a considerable influence on commitment.
