Abstract
This study examines the assertive speech acts used by the main character in the
movie Materialists (2025). Materialists (2025) tells the story of Lucy Mason, a
professional matchmaker in New York City. This study aims to identify and classify
the types of assertive speech acts uttered by Lucy Mason in her interactions with
clients and to examine how the use of those speech acts reflects her personality and
supports her role as a matchmaker. This study employed a descriptive qualitative
approach. The analysis identified 50 assertive speech acts produced by Lucy
Mason, which were classified into six categories based on Searle’s (1979) theory:
stating, suggesting, claiming, boasting, complaining, and reporting. The findings
show that stating was the most dominant category with 32 utterances (64%),
followed by claiming (7), reporting (5), complaining (4), and suggesting and
boasting (1 each). The dominance of stating indicates Lucy Mason’s tendency to
express her opinions, evaluations, beliefs, and reassurance directly when interacting
with her clients. The findings suggest that Lucy’s use of assertive speech acts
reflects a confident, direct, and communicative interaction style that supports the
portrayal of her extroverted personality and her professional role as a matchmaker.
