Abstract

The thesis aims to explore the cultural values and identity negotiation within an intercultural American-Italian family portrayed in the From Scratch (2022) series. Created by Tembi Locke and Attica Locke, the series is adapted from the memoir “From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home.” The story follows characters from different cultural backgrounds, American and Italian, and must navigate various challenges related to personal goals, autonomy, family obligations, and cultural expectations throughout their relationship and family life. This thesis analyzes how cultural values and identity negotiation are represented through the characters’ interactions, conflicts, and communication processes in the series. This thesis applies Stella Ting-Toomey’s Identity Negotiation Theory and is used to examine the negotiation process as the characters seek understanding, acceptance, and harmony despite their cultural differences. In addition, the concepts of Individualism and Collectivism by Geert Hofstede are used to identify the cultural tendencies reflected within the families. This research employs a qualitative method through library research, while narrative theory is applied as a supporting approach to analyze the portrayal of characterization, conflicts, and cultural values within the narrative structure of the series. The study concludes that From Scratch (2022) portrays cultural values as one of the factors contributing to intercultural family conflicts, while identity negotiation functions as a continuous process through which the characters communicate, compromise, and adapt to different family expectations. The series demonstrates that cultural differences become opportunities to build mutual understanding, strengthen family relationships, and negotiate identities without abandoning their cultural backgrounds
