Abstract

This study analyzes directive speech acts performed by Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) and how those directive speech acts contribute to his characterization. The study is conducted within the field of pragmatics, particularly Speech Act Theory. This research uses a qualitative method with non-participant observation and pragmatic inference. The data are Ethan Hunt’s utterances that indicate an attempt to influence the hearer’s action or response. The analysis applies felicity conditions to identify and classify the directive speech acts by examining the propositional content condition, preparatory condition, sincerity condition, and essential condition of each utterance. The findings show that there are 42 directive utterances performed by Ethan Hunt. Eight types of directive speech acts are found in the data: asking, commanding, begging, forbidding, advising, urging, ordering, and requesting. Commanding is the most frequent type, appearing 19 times, followed by asking and forbidding, which appear 7 times each. Recommending and suggesting are not found because no utterance in the selected data fulfills the felicity conditions of those directive types. The directive patterns characterize Ethan Hunt as a decisive and action-oriented speaker, an information-oriented speaker, a preventive communicator, and a context-sensitive speaker. This study contributes to pragmatic analysis by showing that directive speech acts can function as linguistic evidence for analyzing characterization in film dialogue.
