Abstract

The Lalundu and Bambakaenu transmigration areas in Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi, possess substantial agricultural potential that remains underutilized, particularly for food crop cultivation. This study aimed to evaluate actual and potential land suitability, identify limiting factors, and formulate improvement measures for five food crop commodities: upland rice (Oryza sativa), maize (Zea mays), soybean (Glycine max), cassava (Manihot esculenta), and taro (Colocasia esculenta). The research was conducted from September 2025 to March 2026 using a semi-detailed survey approach based on Land Mapping Units (LMU) derived from the overlay of land use, soil type, and slope maps using ArcGIS. A total of 20 LMU were established as soil sampling points. Land characteristics assessed included temperature, rainfall, humidity, drainage, soil texture, soil depth, total-N, P₂O₅, K₂O, CEC, soil pH, organic carbon, and slope. Land suitability classification was performed using the matching method through the Land Suitability Assessment System (LSAS). Results indicated that under actual conditions, maize, soybean, and cassava remain cultivable under limited conditions, predominantly classified as S3 (marginally suitable). Following improvement measures, potential land suitability showed class upgrades for upland rice, maize, soybean, cassava, and taro to S2–S3 classes. The primary limiting factors identified were nutrient availability (N, P, K) and nutrient retention (CEC, pH, organic carbon), which can be addressed through fertilization, organic matter addition, and dolomite lime application, as well as slope gradient, which can be mitigated by terracing. Rooting medium limitations were found to be permanent in nature; therefore, management is focused on selecting tolerant crop commodities. This study provides essential baseline information for the sustainable development of food crop agriculture in transmigration areas.
