Abstract

This study aimed to explore the experiences of serving a sentence among narcotics inmates at Class I Kedungpane Correctional Institution, Semarang. This study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive phenomenological approach. The participants consisted of five narcotics inmates who had served more than six months of their sentence. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological method, which includes holistic reading of the data, identification of meaning units, transformation of psychological meanings, and theme synthesis. The findings revealed four major synthesized themes: emotional turmoil during the early stage of incarceration, the dynamics of serving a prison sentence, adaptation to a restricted life, and spirituality as a source of personal strength. Participants experienced various emotional reactions, including shock, sadness, anxiety, regret, and longing for their families due to the loss of freedom and changes in their living environment. Participants began to perceive imprisonment as a form of life lesson, self-reflection, and an opportunity for personal improvement. The adaptation process was reflected in their involvement in correctional programs, physical activities, engagement in meaningful routines, and adjustment to the social environment within the correctional institution. Spiritually emerged as an important source of strength that helped participants attain inner peace, regulate their emotions, and cope with the challenges of incarceration. Support from family members, fellow inmates, and correctional officers also contributed to the adaptation process. The findings indicate that the experience of serving a sentence is a dynamic process characterized by a transition from psychological distress toward adaptation and personal growth.
