Abstract

Together with era development, an area is likely impossible to get free from changes. Space changes in an area always bring effect and strong influence in this area. It means that every space change in an area affects on the image of that area. The development also happens in the area of Old City in Semarang as a nature reservation owned by Semarang. There are changes in the area both in physical condition and function at a different time. The physical condition of The area of Old City in Semarang and the activities of people who live in that area are affecting to each other. The change of an activity will affect the change of the space function in it. One of the phenomenon of change in The area of Old City in Semarang is the function change of public open spaces, where in the Dutch governance, they were established and their function was adjusted to the needs at that time, such as parade plein used as the Dutch troops’ marching practice and also as music performance in the afternoon. An open field, integrated with Tawang railway station, was also used by the society to exercise, play, interact, and do other social activities. At the moment, the condition has changed along with the residence, parade plein changed into Taman Srigunting, and some of the area have become BTPN building. Public open space integrated with Tawang railway station has changed into Polder Tawang. In the end, the change of public open space function affects on the image of The area of Old City in Semarang as Historical Area which existence is reserved. The purpose of this research is to acknowledge effects caused by the change of public open space function according to era development on the image of The area of Old City in Semarang as historical area fulfilled with buildings which have colonial architecture style. For instance, Taman Srigunting which was designed and built by the Indonesian government for the neighborhood society, where this park grows in an area created by the Dutch government and the Dutch society lived there, too. The same function change also happens to Polder Tawang and BTPN building. More or less, the function changing will affect on the image of The area of Old City in Semarang. However, there are two kinds of variables in this research which are based on discussed research substance, they are independent variable which includes public open space function ( ecology function, architectural/esthetical function, social function) and dependent variable which includes area image ( area identity, area structure, meaning of area). Both variables are analyzed using rationalistic quantitative method which techniques are multiple analysis technique and descriptive analysis.
After doing analysis process, the results are: Taman Srigunting and Polder Tawang are successful to conduct each function, but generally, respondents say that Taman Srigunting is much better in doing its function as public open space than Polder Tawang. As for BTPN buiding, public agrees that the building disturbs the image of The area of Old City in Semarang because the design of the building does not adjust the neighborhood and the buildings surrounding it, and also, the condition of the empty building which is not taken care of and used gives more negative effect on the image of The area of Old City in Semarang.
Conclusion drawn from this research is the existence of Taman Srigunting and Polder Tawang which have three functions as public open space such as ecology, esthetical, and social function, and the existence of BTPN building affect on the image of The area of Old City in Semarang.
