Abstract
This research addresses the significant gap in English proficiency among students from extreme poverty backgrounds at ‘‘Sekolah Rakyat’’ Gresik, where 80% of students struggle to understand English and perceive it as irrelevant to their daily lives. The primary issues include limited access to culturally relevant materials and low motivation to learn foreign languages. To address these challenges, this study develops GIRI (Gresik Inspirational Rakyat Illustrated Stories), a trilingual storybook (English, Indonesian, and Javanese) designed to enhance reading and writing skills through translanguaging pedagogy and culturally responsive content. This research employs Research and Development (R&D) adapted from the Borg and Gall model, simplified into six stages: (1) Information Collecting, (2) Planning, (3) Preliminary Product Development, (4) Preliminary Field Testing, (5) Revising Main Product, and (6) Small Scale Field Testing. This simplified approach is appropriate for time-limited educational research while maintaining methodological rigor. Data were analyzed using qualitative methods for interviews and quantitative methods for validation scores. GIRI’s uniqueness lies in its participatory development model, where students author local stories (such as Pasar Bandeng and Damar Kurung) while researchers ensure linguistic accuracy. Results indicate that integrating local narratives in trilingual format lowers students’ affective filters and enhances conceptual understanding. Javanese and Indonesian function as scaffolding, enabling students to construct English sentences with greater confidence. GIRI serves as both a literacy tool and a medium for preserving Gresik’s culture, providing practical guidance for teachers in marginalized schools implementing contextual, cultural-based learning.
