Abstract

Adolescence is a developmental phase that is vulnerable to social pressure, including body shaming, which can affect the formation of body image. This study aims to determine the effect of body shaming and self-esteem on body image in female students at the Matholi'ul Anwar Islamic Boarding School in Lamongan. The study subjects were 211 female students aged 15–18 years old who were selected using a proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The research instrument consisted of three scales with a total of 54 items, namely the Body shaming scale (18 items), the Self-esteem scale (7 items), and the Body image scale (29 items). Data analysis was carried out using multiple linear regression to test the simultaneous and partial effects between variables. The results showed that body shaming had a negative and significant effect on body image with a contribution of 50.3%, while self-esteem had a positive and significant effect on body image with a contribution of 34%. Simultaneously, body shaming and self-esteem together had a significant effect on body image by 53.6%, while 46.4% was influenced by other factors outside the study. Body shaming had a more dominant contribution than self-esteem, with a relative contribution of 74.7% compared to 25.3%. This research provides theoretical contributions to the development of social psychology and adolescent development studies in religious settings, as well as practical implications for Islamic boarding schools in designing guidance and counseling programs that support self-acceptance and positive body image in female students.
