Abstract
This study analyzes class and racial struggle in Amsterdam, a film directed by David O. Russell. The film portrays the experiences of Harold, Burt, and Valerie as protagonists from different racial and social class backgrounds who face class inequality and racial struggle in American society during the 1930s. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with intrinsic and extrinsic elements. Data are collected from scenes and dialogues and analyzed using Louis Althusser’s theories of the Ideological State Apparatus (ISA) and Repressive State Apparatus (RSA). The results show that structural oppression is maintained through social institutions such as the law, the police, and the ruling elite, while the friendship among the characters is depicted as a form of solidarity and resistance against social injustice and racial discrimination.
