Abstract

This research explores how social pressure affects individual action, what forms of social pressure Grace experiences and what social actions are reflected in her behavior. The background shows that social pressure is a strong influence from family, social class and traditions that guides how people act. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method that includes both intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. Information is gathered from scenes and conversations and examined using narrative theory and Max Weber’s theory of social action. The findings indicate that Grace’s actions are affected by family traditions, social status and the need to survive. Affective action becomes dominant, followed by instrumental rational action. The research finds that social pressure influences how people act when there are clear rules in place.
