Abstract
Good Boys (2019) movie follows the story of child characters who use taboo words throughout their chaotic journey from childhood into early adolescence. They are interested in knowing adult-like things. Because of that, this research intends to analyze how taboo words uttered by children are translated in the Good Boys (2019) movie. Since this movie deals with children growing into adolescence, many taboo words are found. Because of the sensitivity of taboo words, especially to children, the process of translation could be challenging. To provide a detailed analysis, a descriptive qualitative method is applied to examine the translation strategies for taboo words. Types of taboo words by Battistella (2005) and taboo words translation strategies by Davoodi (2009) are applied to analyze the data. The data taken are those utterances from the three main child characters, Max, Lucas, and Thor, that contain taboo words. The findings show that obscenity is the most dominant type of taboo word both in English and in Indonesian. Meanwhile, the most applied strategy in translating the taboo words is substitution, followed by censorship and taboo for taboo that nearly have the exact numbers as substitution. It suggests that the translator attempts to mitigate the use of unnecessary taboo words. The translator only retains the taboo terms related to sexual activity to guide children toward adulthood things in preparation for their adult years.
