Abstract
Women have consistently been the object of oppression by the patriarchal system that seeks to suppress women’s sexuality. One of the suppressions is through compulsory heterosexuality. Compulsory heterosexuality is the idea that heterosexuality is a mandate given by institutions upon women instead of a natural preference. This thesis aims to investigate the portrayal of compulsory heterosexuality in the novel Roses, in the Mouth of a Lion by Bushra Rehman, and how women-identified experiences act as resistance toward this suppression. The writer uses a feminist approach in conducting this thesis and library research methods to collect the data. The findings indicate that compulsory heterosexuality takes form in various things, such as traditional gender roles, the objectification of women by men, the imposition of heterosexual marriage, and the erasure of lesbian existence. Women-identified experiences, which are seen through female friendship, lesbian partnership, and communal bonds between women, serve as the antidote to the suppression women faced.
