Abstract

Cities are shaped by social relations that influence how different communities face and occupy urban space. Marginalized communities, in particular, frequently negotiate spaces affected by inequality and exclusion. This research thesis set out to examine how Tangerine (2015) represents marginalized communities through their spatial dynamics in Los Angeles. The objectives are to explore the construction of marginalized communities through the intrinsic elements and to understand how the film illustrates the production of space among their collectives in Los Angeles. Using Henri Lefebvre’s spatial triad, the study focuses on how transgender individuals, sex workers, immigrants, and people of color experience, occupy, and redefine Los Angeles as an urban space. To gather the data, library research method is being employed. The data is classified, interpreted, analyzed, and synthesized. The results show that in Tangerine (2015), multiple intrinsic elements construct the marginalized lives in Los Angeles. Their spaces are produced through routines, regulations, and meaning filled experiences. Imbalances of power, discriminations, and spatial controls pervade the daily experiences in the city. This research offers an understanding of the spatial production of those systematically disadvantaged by the existing system in the city of Los Angeles.
