Abstract
This study entitled “Americans’ Views of Lesbianism in the 1960s as Depicted in The Children’s Hour (1961)” examines the homophobia towards lesbians in 1960s America. Using the film The Children’s Hour by director William Wyler as the main object, this study aims to uncover how a lie could lead to the hate of queer people, specifically lesbians. This study is different from previous studies because it uses the film, instead of the play as the object, and it highlights homophobia and its effect on its characters, providing a deeper psychological and character-driven study of how lesbians and societal repression interact. This study uses Michel Foucault’s The History of Sexuality, Vol. 1 to analyze how the society constructs and punishes lesbian identity. The findings show that a lie can destroy the lives and reputations of people, particularly lesbians in the 1960s. It also leads to the repression faced by many women regarding their sexualities.
