Abstract

This study looks at the depiction of religious fundamentalism and its two forms of resistance in the Netflix miniseries Midnight Mass (2021). It focuses on how rigid religious belief controls a small religious community and creates a conflict with human values. The study uses George Lakoff’s Strict Father and Nurturant Parent models as its main framework to analyze the topic. Using a qualitative approach based on library research, it explores important scenes through dialogues, monologues and visual elements. The findings show that religious fundamentalism is depicted through the Strict Father model, where authority, obedience and punishment are emphasized. At the same time, resistance appears through the Nurturant Parent model, where empathy and responsibility are prioritized. This study helps us better understand how dangerous rigid belief can become when it is used excessively while empathy and responsibility offer a more humane way to challenge such belief.
