Abstract

The language features proposed by Lakoff (1975), explain the differences in how
women are expected to speak in society, influenced by their gender roles. The
study, Analysis of Language Features Used by the Main Characters in On the
Basis of Sex (2018), analyzes the utilization of language features by the main
characters using Lakoff’s (1975) theory. It aims to examine whether these features
are related to inferiority or influenced by social factors, as supported by Holmes’
(2012) theory. A purposive sampling approach is used to collect the data, which
are then analyzed using a descriptive qualitative methodology, non-participant
observation, and referential identity analysis. The findings reveal that Lakoff’s
theory does not correspond in the movie, as both main characters used language
features, and the features used do not indicate subordinate positions. Eight out of
ten language features are found, including lexical hedges, tag questions, rising
intonation, empty adjectives, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, super polite
forms, and emphatic stress. The film’s social factors influence the use of the
features.
