Abstract

Esperanza Rising is a novel with a strong focus on bilingualism that features
characters from diverse social backgrounds, which naturally results in codeswitching and code-mixing as communication strategies and identity markers. This
study’s main objectives are (1) identifying the types, (2) analyzing the factors, and
(3) explaining the motives of code-switching and code-mixing between English and
Spanish used by the characters in Esperanza Rising. The study starts with the data
collection process through reading and collecting the direct speech with language
alternation. The analysis process continues by classifying before examining and
interpreting them using relevant theories. The results show that code-mixing
outnumbers code-switching. Furthermore, the most influential factor is the social
roles and relationships, and the motives that are often used are showing empathy
and need-filling. The main contribution of this study is to give a more
comprehensive illustration of the use of language alternation and to improve the
educational and communication strategies, especially within multilingual
communities.
