Abstract

Slang has become a linguistic phenomenon used by particular social groups for specific purposes, one of which is the queer community that uses gay slang as a form of linguistic identity and group expression. This study analyzes the use of gay slang expressions in Bros (2022), focusing on the utterances of the main character, Bobby Lieber. The aims of this study are to identify the types of meaning in gay slang expressions based on Leech’s (1981) theory of seven types of meaning, and to examine whether these meanings reflect the use of gay slang in real-life contexts. It employs a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The result of this research shows that there are 33 data of gay slang found in Bobby's utterances. Four out of seven types of meaning were identified, including connotative, social, affective, and reflected meaning. The result shows that connotative meaning is the most dominant type, which indicates that the movie is mostly shaped by shared understanding and implied meanings of the queer community. Furthermore, the comparison with real-life studies shows that several terms carry similar meanings in both contexts. This study concludes that the representation of gay slang in the movie constructed in a same way as in reality.
