Abstract

Red chili (Capsicum annum L.) is a plant that is widely cultivated in the Indonesian agricultural sector. The initial stage
cultivating red chilies is through germination and seeding. One of the factors that affect the growth of red chili is the planting
medium. This study aims to determine the effect of different types of growing media on the percentage of germination and
growth of red chili. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments of growing media, namely
soil, sand, soil with sand (1:1), and soil, sand with manure (1:1:1) each with 3 replications. Statistical analysis test using
Kruskal Wallis followed by Mann Whitney at 95% confidence level. The results showed that soil was the fastest medium for
red chili germination (3,66 days) and a mixture of soil, sand, and manure (1:1:1) was the best medium for the growth of red
chili seedlings, namely the time of leaf emergence (7,33 days). days), leaf width (0,42 cm), leaf length (1,98 cm), plant
height (2,9 cm), root length (4,6 cm) and seedling wet weight (1,91 cm). Planting media had a significant effect on the
percentage of germination time, time of leaf emergence, leaf width, leaf length and plant height of red chili. 100% soil is the
optimum medium for red chili germination, while a mixture of soil, sand, and manure (1:1:1) is the optimum medium for the
growth of red chili seedlings.
