Abstract
Background: Craniotomy is a common neurosurgical procedure that often results in significant postoperative pain. If not properly managed, this pain can affect recovery and lead to complications. Finger-holding relaxation therapy is a non-pharmacological technique that helps reduce pain by promoting relaxation and regulating sensory responses. Although several studies suggest that this method can lower postoperative pain, evidence remains limited and inconsistent. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of finger-holding relaxation therapy in reducing pain among postcraniotomy patients. Methods: This study used a descriptive case study design involving three post-craniotomy patients treated in a High Care Unit (HCU) of a referral hospital in Central Java, Indonesia. Finger-holding relaxation therapy was given twice daily for three days (15 minutes per session). Inclusion criteria were adults (>18 years), ≥8 hours postsurgery, GCS ≥13, and mild–moderate pain. Patients with cognitive, psychological, or motor impairments were excluded. Data were collected through NRS pain assessments, vital sign observations, interviews, and medical record review. Results: All three patients experienced a consistent decrease in pain after the therapy. Pain scores dropped from 4 to 1, 4 to 0, and 6 to 4 over three days, with an average reduction of 3 points. This shows that the therapy effectively lowered pain in all patients. Conclusion: Finger-holding relaxation therapy effectively reduced pain in post-craniotomy patients and shows promise as a complementary nursing intervention. Further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness and optimal use.
