Abstract

(Revata Dharani Sofjan. 26040119120030. Identifikasi, Kelimpahan, dan Prevalensi Spons Pembunuh Karang (Coral-Killing Sponge) pada Terumbu Karang Kepulauan Karimunjawa. Diah Permata Wijayanti dan Dwi Haryanti) Spons pembunuh karang (SPK) adalah istilah yang digunakan untuk spons invasif yang dapat tumbuh menutupi dan membunuh jaringan karang. Terpios hoshinota dan Chalinula nematifera, dua spesies yang dikenal secara luas sebagai SPK, telah menjadi ancaman potensial terhadap terumbu karang Indo-Pasifik. Belum ada studi mengenainya di Kepulauan Karimunjawa, daerah yang dikenal sebagai salah satu pusat wisata bahari terumbu karang di Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi spesies SPK di perairan Karimunjawa berdasarkan pengamatan morfologi dan spikula; mengetahui kelimpahan dan prevalensi SPK di perairan Karimunjawa; dan mengetahui preferensi substrat SPK di Karimunjawa. Sebanyak 58 sampel diambil dari 9 lokasi di Karimunjawa: P. Sambangan, P. Cemara Besar, P. Cemara Kecil, P. Sintok, P. Tengah, Taka Menjangan Besar, P. Geleang, P. Burung, dan P. Menjangan Kecil. Pengamatan spikula dilakukan di laboratorium menggunakan mikroskop cahaya. Pengambilan data kelimpahan dan prevalensi dilakukan di 9 lokasi yang sama menggunakan metode belt transect. Hasil identifikasi morfologi dan spikula sampel berupa spesies Terpios hoshinota, Chalinula nematifera, C. milnei, Clathria sp., dan 4 sampel yang tidak teridentifikasi. Rata-rata kelimpahan T. hoshinota pada kedalaman 2 – 3 meter adalah 0,04 (±0,06) individu/m2, sedangkan pada kedalaman 7 meter adalah 0,12 (±0,11) ind/m2. Chalinula nematifera dan C. milnei tidak ditemukan di kedalaman 2 – 3 meter, sedangkan pada kedalaman 7 meter masingmasing memiliki rata-rata kelimpahan 0,17 (±0,27) ind/m2
dan 0,07 (±0,2) ind/m2. Rata-rata prevalensi karang terserang T. hoshinota, C. nematifera, dan C. milnei secara berturut-turut adalah 6,01% (±5,71%); 6,74% (±7,1%); dan 3,08% (±8,61%). Ketiga spesies banyak ditemukan di substrat karang hidup, dan beberapa di substrat karang mati. Kelimpahan dan prevalensi SPK ini cukup signifikan untuk dianggap sebagai ancaman potensial terhadap kelangsungan hidup karang di Kep. Karimunjawa, khususnya di area dengan aktivitas manusia tinggi dan jumlah koloni karang rendah.

Coral-killing sponge (CKS) has become a term for invasive sponges that can overgrow and kill corals in the process. Terpios hoshinota and Chalinula nematifera, two species widely known as CKS, have become potential threats in Indo-Pacific reefs. However, there had not been any study conducted in Karimunjawa Islands, a well-known coral reef tourism spot in Indonesia. This study was conducted to identify the species of CKS in Karimunjawa based on morphology and spicule shape; to calculate the abundance and prevalence of CKS in Karimunjawa; and to determine substrate preferences of CKS in Karimunjawa. A total of 58 samples were taken from 9 sites in Karimunjawa, namely Sambangan, Cemara Besar, Cemara Kecil, Sintok, Tengah, Taka Menjangan Besar, Geleang, Burung, and Menjangan Kecil. Spicules were observed using light microscope. Abundance (ind/m2) and prevalence (sponge-invaded coral colony/total coral colony) of CKS species were observed on the same sites using belt transect method. The samples identified were Terpios hoshinota, Chalinula nematifera, Chalinula milnei, Clathria sp., and 4 unknown samples. Average abundance of T. hoshinota at 2m depth was 0,04 (±0,06) ind/m2
and at 7m depth was 0,12 (±0,11) ind/m2; while C. nematifera and C. milnei were not found in 2m depth, but at 7m depth had average abundance of 0,17 (±0,27) ind/m2 and 0,07 (±0,2) ind/m2
, respectively. Average prevalences of T. hoshinota, C. nematifera, and C. milnei at 7m depth were 6,01% (±5,71%); 6,74% (±7,1%); and 3,08% (±8,61%), respectively. All three species of CKS were mostly found on live corals, with several found on dead corals. These results shows that CKS poses a potential threat to the corals of Karimunjawa Islands, especially in areas with high human activity and low number of coral colonies.
