Abstract

COVID-19 has long-term impacts on it’s survivors, one of the impact is hypochondriasis or preoccupation with beliefs or fear of serious illness. These symptoms can be overcome using cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) models, one of them is the virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET). This study aims to examine the effect of VRET in reducing hypochondriasis symptoms in COVID-19 survivors. The study used a parallel group pretest-posttest design with a population of undergraduate students of Diponegoro University COVID-19 survivors. The Paired T-Test for within experimental group showed a significant difference in reducing hypochondriasis scores in the second round of the VRET intervention between post test 1 data (M = 0,600; SD = 0,966; t = 1,964; p = 0,081) and post test 2 data (M = 1,600; SD = 0,966; t = 5,237; p = 0,001), while the Mann Whitney U Test for between groups showed no significant difference between post test 1 result (U = 72,000; p = 0,892) and post test 2 result (U = 56,500; p = 0,311) in control and experimental groups. The effect of the VRET intervention was not significantly attributable to the reduction of hypochondriasis, so further research is needed with collective time setting to find out the differences between groups.
