Abstract
With the democratic regression and authoritarian governments coming back to power in Asia, pro-democracy activists have risen in return. These activists are united under the umbrella of the Milk Tea Alliance, a transnational pro-democracy network that operates mainly in Asia and most recently in Myanmar. Using Myanmar’s 2021 anti-coup protests as a case study, this research draws from transnational advocacy networks and social network theory, and uses Twitter as a data source for content analysis to examine the Milk Tea Alliance’s role in advocating for Myanmar’s democracy. By mapping out the alliance’s activities, the structure of its network, and the opportunity that it perceives, this research finds that while the Milk Tea Alliance fulfills the characteristics and has implemented the strategies of a transnational advocacy network, the alliance is still limited by its social media-based operations and the lack of opportunities to create change in Myanmar.
